Mientras está castigado a ayudar a Skinner en su sueño, encontrar un astro nuevo y ponerle su nombre, Bart encuentra un cometa y los astrónomos le ponen su nombre. Poco después se descubre que el Cometa Bart caerá sobre Springfield, destruyéndola, y el pánico se apodera de la ciudad. Tras un intento fallido de destruir el cometa, todo Springfield se dirige hacia la casa de Ned Flanders, el único vecino de la ciudad con un refugio nuclear... en el que no caben todos.
